How reliable is hearsay?

As everyone now knows, the Pope’s personal preacher – Raniero Cantalamessa – has likened criticism of the Catholic Church for its admitted paedophile activities to the Shoah. Reverend Cantalamessa even made this comparison on Good Friday – a regular date for Christian pogroms well into the eighteenth century.
As most people know, Reverend Cantalamessa claims that this is not his comparison, but comes from a remark made to him by an anonymous ‘Jewish friend’.
Since most Jews – and now, it seems, the Vatican itself – are horrified by the tastelessness of this comparison (being criticised in the press is not quite genocide) shouldn’t Reverend Cantalamessa name this anonymous, and very unusual, ally he has?

If I said what I truly think I would have the lynch mob after me to burn me at the stake. It is questionable indeed.
