VBAC with newer scar?

As the due date nears, I am seriously thinking of going the VBAC route instead of a repeat Cesarean operation. I’ve been researching as much as I could. I went to two different doctors. The first doctor seemed to lean toward be having a repeat C-section due to the fact that the scar was so new. (My first daughter and the second will be a year and a half apart, making the scar 1.5 years old.) The new doctor seems to think I would be fine with a VBAC. Ultimately, as both doctors have said, the decision is up to me.

I’ve looked everywhere I could online to find any information about newer and older scars and statistics and studies regarding the successful rate of VBAC. I have found nothing to do with scars. Does anyone have personal experience with VBAC and a newer C-section scar? Does anyone know of a website with this information? In all other ways I am a definite candidate for VBAC. Of course I still worry.

Thank you in advance.

In my 15 years experience in Maternal/Newborn nursing, every OB I have discussed VBAC with has pretty much stated that the scar is as strong at 1 year post-op as it will ever be. Therefore, don’t let having a “recent” C-section concern you. Some doctors are truly reluctant to work with VBAC moms simply because it’s easier to schedule you for a repeat C-section, but that doesn’t sound the like the case with your doctors.

Also, I’m sure someone will feel the need to mention that her doctor doesn’t “allow” VBAC at all or her hospital doesn’t “allow” them. Well, considering a C-section costs around $18,000 compared to the $6,000 of a vaginal delivery, I would venture to say it’s not a matter of “allowing”, but a matter of increasing revenue. After all, Mayo Clinic encourages VBAC with the right candidate, and they ARE the foremost medical facility in North America.

(Also, I’ve only encountered ONE “ruptured” uterus with a VBAC and that was because the doc increasing the pitocin in amounts so frequent that the RN taking care of the patient refused to do it, so the doc came over and did it himself. The patient’s uterus didn’t implode, there was simply a window in the scar when she finally went back for a repeat C-section and she and baby went home 3 days later.)

Best wishes!
