Should I move to Seattle or Chicago?

I live in San Jose and it is mostly an international community, flowing veils, head garb, many languages, etc. I am looking for a city that is more American than international, but is still diverse. It is an earshot within fun nightlife, music, and restaurants, but also quiet clean suburbs. (BTW I am SWM, late 30′s, straight. Most of my friends date and marry Asian girls here in San Jose because it is primarily an Asian community. I do prefer the SWF midwestern look).I do not mind clouds and rain – friendliness of the people and good feel for the city is much more important to me than weather. I have heard good things about Seattle, but mostly nature and not people. I have heard great things about Chicago, both culture and people. People are telling me Seattle people are more distant and the city is not as clean and well kept as Chicago. I am ready to just bolt this month! Please provide suggestions/feedback to help me find a city where I can call home and have a sense of belonging.

I spent last year in Seattle, and have spent the last six months in the Chicago suburbs. Prior to that, I lived in Livermore, so I understand your comments around the Bay area being an international community.

I have really enjoyed the people both in Seattle AND in Chicago – in both locales, there are are a heck of a lot more (comparatively) of the SWF than in the Bay, so I think either would be a win for you.

My perspective on the friendliness of the people is that folks in Chicago are more quickly friendly than in Seattle, but deep friendships grew more quickly in Seattle than Chicago.

One thing you should REALLY look at before you jump is the weather. There’s a heck of a lot more rain in Seattle than in the Bay – some people can’t handle that. Chicago is colder than heXX in the winter (and I’ve been told over and over that this year was mild), and it gets a heck of a lot hotter than the Bay – if you haven’t lived where it snows before, I’d be really careful.

Either way, good luck! Both cities are truly great!
